The summit will take place in the form of a video conference, the AFP news agency reported.
Michel said the EU had “complete solidarity” with the Israeli people following the Hamas attacks a week ago.
In his invitation letter, the EU leader wrote that Israel has the right to defend itself in accordance with international law. He also said that the siege of the Gaza Strip caused alarm in the international community, and therefore he called for the meeting.
– It is vital for the European Council, in line with our treaties and values, to reach a common understanding and find a clear and common direction that reflects the complexity of what is happening, he wrote.
Michel said that the EU must be a champion of peace and respect international law, and must work to prevent conflicts from spreading to other countries in the region. He added that the conflict has the potential to fuel extremism in EU countries and could lead to increased migration and large movements of people.
The Israeli Army (IDF) has announced that it has prepared a coordinated attack on the Gaza Strip with air, land and sea forces.
– We will immediately attack Gaza city broadly, said IDF chief spokesman Daniel Hagari in a televised address on Saturday evening.
