An international military pilgrimage to Lourdes, organized by the Czech Republic Army Spiritual Service, begins. Nearly a hundred soldiers, civil servants or their family members will take part in it. This tradition of gathering at one of the world’s most famous pilgrimage sites began as an act of reconciliation between members of the French and German soldiers after World War II. Currently, nearly fifteen thousand soldiers from more than forty countries of the world regularly participate in the event. Since 1992, Czech soldiers have also been coming to Lourdes every year. The pilgrimage will last until May 14.
A memorial service at the grave of Bedřich Smetana in the Vyšehrad cemetery will start the 78th year of the Prague Spring festival in the morning. In keeping with tradition, organizers will honor the memory of the composer, whose cycle of Má vlast symphonic poetry opens the performance each year.
