Former Manchester United player Gordon McQueen has died

Former Scotland, Manchester United and Leeds defender Gordon McQueen has died.

This was reported by the BBC and several British media. McQueen lived to be 70 years old.

Manchester United mention their own death website. McQueen was diagnosed with dementia before he died.

– We are devastated to have to announce that our former defender Gordon McQueen has passed away, the club wrote.

McQueen played for “The Red Devils” between 1978 and 1985. In that period, he scored two goals in 184 games for the club. He also played for St. Mirren and Leeds. He scored the first goal as United went from 0–2 to 2–2 in the 1979 FA Cup Final against Arsenal, but Alan Sunderland equalized for Arsenal before the end.

– It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Gordon McQueen, 70, who died at home early this morning, survived by his wife Yvonne, daughters Hayley and Anna, son Eddie and beloved grandchildren Rudi, Etta and Ayla, the family said in a statement

McQueen earned 30 senior caps for Scotland and scored five goals. One of them came against Norway in an EC qualifying game at the Ullevaal stadium in 1979.
