Aimee Reinhart of the Associated Press comes to Bergen to talk about how local journalism can be strengthened through the use of artificial intelligence and new technology. He joins Schibsted director of data and technology Sven Størmer Thaulow in sessions that pinpoint the future in a rapidly changing media landscape.
Should editors be more publicly visible? Alexandra Beverfjord (Dagbladet), Vibeke Fürst Haugen (NRK), Ove Mellingen (Telemarksavisa) and Veslemøy Østrem (Altinget) take their places on the panel which will discuss this.
Freedom of the press around the world became the theme when Khadija Patel opened the conference. This development has gone unnecessarily in many countries that previously had free and independent media. How do we face this challenge? Patel heads the press freedom organization the International Press Institute and has backgrounds in, among others, the BBC World Service, Sky News and Al Jazeera. Following this, we gain insight into how Norwegian journalists report from authoritarian regimes.
Who are we not reaching and how can we work to reach them? We work on groups that do not use editor-controlled media, and groups that deliberately avoid news.
There will also be a media policy debate from the stage at Medieleder. Anette Trettebergstuen (Ap) and politicians from SP, SV, Høyre and Venstre were on the panel led by Derek Bjølgerud from TV 2. How will they deal with the media challenges with the tech giants? This is one of the topics we will learn more about in this session.
The conference was chaired by Rima Iraqi, presenter at NRK and Jane Throndsen, editor for VG+ digital stories.
As usual, Medieleder is a collaboration between the Media Companies National Association (MBL) and the Norwegian Editors’ Association (NR). Therefore, this program also includes the NR national meeting and the MBL annual meeting.
Medieleder 2023 will be held on Wednesday 10 May from 9.30am to 5.15pm at the Hotel Norge. The night before, at 20:00 Tuesday 9 May, there will be a get-together at the Hotel Norge under the auspices of the Norwegian Editors’ Association. Immediately after the conference on May 10, Nordic Media Day will open in Grieghallen. In the afternoon, it was time to present the Media Awards of the Year on the Ole Bull stage.
