The league title is in the box, but the hunt for “The Treble” continues for Manchester City. Another title could be secured on Saturday, when city rivals United face off in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
Before the game has been BBC sports editor Dan Roan gets an exclusive interview with one of the game’s expected protagonists, Erling Braut Haaland.
The Norwegian City striker had an outstanding debut season in English football. He has broken records most weekends and with a total of 36 goals in the league, he is the top scorer in a single Premier League season.
Hence, it was perhaps not surprising that Roan asked, among other things, the following questions:
“You said your dream was to be the best in the world. Have you fulfilled that dream? Do you think you are the best goalscorer in the world right now?”
Haaland smiled slyly as he replied:
– Good question. I’m not going to answer that. I think someone else will have to answer that, but I’ve scored the most goals this season, so it’s a good start.
– The rudest in the world
We took the question to NRK football expert Carl-Erik Torp, who had some say in what Haaland might suggest.
– He is the worst goalscorer in the world right now, and the hottest striker. Just look at the numbers. He has scored goals and set records, noted Torp.
He pointed out that the throne was left somewhat vacant after Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo both crossed the aisle as footballers.
– It’s been a few years since they were at their peak, and since then, the likes of Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandowski have taken on the role. They have delivered a bit weaker this season, while Haaland has delivered the best season by a striker in the Premier League.
– How would you interpret Haaland’s own answer to the question?
– I interpret that to mean that he’s very aware that he knows he’s the one who scores the most goals, and that’s no surprise. I believe him when he says that winning titles means more than scoring goals, but he has animal instincts and makes a living from scoring goals, so it’s clear that goals mean a lot too, said Carl Erik Torp
– Wherever I go, people want to see me
With two matches remaining, the Norwegian has scored a total of 52 goals in all competitions. It is also a record for a Premier League player.
It made him a superstar. Haaland does not hide that life has changed. He chooses to enjoy it, even though he sometimes wishes he could do something without being photographed. At the same time, he realized that it was impossible.
– I am 1.96 tall and have long blonde hair. Wherever I go, people want to see me. This is my life now so what can I do, he asked rhetorically.
The 22-year-old admitted that it was a huge relief to win the Premier League. But the season is far from over. And if the FA Cup final against Manchester United was big, the Champions League final against Inter will be even bigger.
Winning the Champions League with City is a dream he shares with manager Pep Guardiola.
– That’s why they bought me, to achieve that, we don’t have to hide it. It will mean everything. I will do everything possible to try to make it happen. It is my biggest dream, and hopefully a dream will come true, Haaland told the BBC.
