Extraordinarily high temperatures have been forecast for the Canary Islands and the Iberian Peninsula this weekend, and the Spanish Meteorological Institute has issued a danger warning for a heatwave.
A heatwave is defined as five consecutive days where the temperature is five degrees above the average maximum temperature.
However, as early as Monday, temperatures are expected to drop again in the Canary Islands.
The Spanish Meteorological Institute (Aemet) wrote on Twitter that temperatures over the next ten days are expected to be very high over most of the Iberian Peninsula.
– Again we must say that in the summer it is normal that it is hot, but this heat will not be normal, said in a Twitter message.
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has also announced that it will be very hot in Spain and Portugal.
– Are you in, or have plans to travel to Spain or Portugal in the next few days? Then you should be aware that it is still very hot. In some places, authorities have issued orange warnings, the agency wrote in a Friday Twitter message.
According to meteorologists, the maximum temperatures in, for example, Madrid and Lisbon will be 43 and 42 degrees, respectively, in the next few days. In Seville, a full 47 degrees has been reported.
The heat comes after Spain experienced its hottest month of May in at least 100 years. Also in June, the country was hit by a heatwave.

In Spain, the average temperature rise was 1.7 degrees compared to pre-industrial times, according to spokesman for the Spanish Meteorological Institute (Aemet), Ruben del Campo. He states that the Spanish summer is getting longer every year. Since the 1980s, the summer season has been extended by one full month.
