As reports of casualties in Turkey continue to come in, it’s becoming increasingly clear that a tragic earthquake has also struck the sport there. The happy news of the discovery of footballer Christian Atsu was followed by a number of sad newspapers. Among them, for example, fourteen members of the women’s volleyball team were missing.
Foreign websites reported that 14 female volleyball players from the Hatay club were trapped under the rubble and there is currently no information about them. “The Hatay women’s volleyball team… 14 players are still under the rubble. My prayers are with them and many others, Words are not enough. Thousands of people came out in the cold. Shattering moments, the nightmare of the century.” wrote writer F. Deniz Erdoğan on Twitter.
Everyone now expects the same success in the case of the women’s volleyball player as it did in the search for the Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu. People have lost touch with the former Premier League star after the tragedy. Zavalen should have been buried under the rubble along with the club’s sports manager Taner Savut (48), who works as sports manager at the club where Atsu plays.
Players who had worked for example at Chelsea or Newcastle, made it out of the rubble alive, and were taken to hospital with a foot injury and breathing difficulties. The search for Turkish club officials, on the other hand, is still ongoing. Unfortunately, with every hour that passes, the chances that rescuers will be able to find him alive decreases…
