Hovland finished brilliantly at the major tournament – finishing in joint third place
Viktor Hovland gave his best spin of the week on the final day of The Players Championship.
With a round of four strokes under par, he finished the tournament with a total of ten strokes under par. Prior to Sunday’s round, he had been in joint 14th place, but the final round sent him into joint third, along with Tom Hoge.
Only Tyrell Hatton, who finished second, had a better lap than Hovland on Sunday.
– It was really cool to get to 68 (four under par) today, when it was windy and there were some tough pins out there. Of course, there is also some pressure. I also felt like I wasn’t playing my best game and still had four shots under par. It’s really cool, Hovland told Discovery+.
Joint third place gave Hovland a prize check of US$1.475 million – the equivalent of 15.6 million Norwegian kroner. He also played his way back into the top ten in the world rankings.
Hovland’s best finish in the previous tournament was last year’s share of ninth place.
The Norwegian was level for the round after eight holes, but then switched gears with birdies on holes 9, 11, 12 and 13. Over the last five holes, he had some good birdie opportunities, but had to see that his putt went wide. .
Scottie Scheffler won the tournament, five strokes ahead of Hatton and seven strokes ahead of Hovland and Hoge. He also took back the throne as the ruler of the world with it.
The Players Championship is considered the single most prestigious tournament on the PGA Tour and is often referred to as the “fifth major”. A total of 25 million US dollars, about 265 million Norwegian kroner, is in the prize pool at the tournament.
