In early August, Brazilian fisherman Romualdo Macedo Rodrigues was on a three-day fishing trip.

Suddenly the boat started drawing water, CNN wrote.

Rodrigues, who can’t swim, didn’t know his bad advice.

Finding strength and hope

Coincidentally, a floating freezer passed by the sinking ship.

Rodrigues jumped into the freezer – and it saved his life.

– I think about my children, wife and family. It gave me strength and hope, but I didn’t think I would survive out there,” Rodrigues told CNN partner Record TV.

He also said that the freezer was also picking up water, and he had to use his hands to get the water out again.

For eleven whole days he floated around the open Atlantic in a freezer box.

Finally he was found by some fishermen who also happened to be sailing.

Rodrigues had no idea that he had sailed north towards the coast off the coast of Suriname, which is Brazil’s neighbor.

– I heard a voice. When I looked up from the freezer, I saw the ship. They didn’t think anyone was in the fridge but they came and then they found me. My vision is impaired. I raised my hand and asked for help, he said.

Fishermen managed to pull it out of the freezer, then brought it safely to the beach.

He was severely dehydrated and unconscious, according to CNN.

Arrested

According to Record TV, Rodrigues was taken to a hospital in Suriname – only to be arrested by the police because he did not have the correct documents about him.

He is said to have been detained for several days before being sent back to Brazil.

– I was born again. I thought I wasn’t going to come back and tell this story, but I did, he said.
