As the Reuters Agency points out, many world leaders who will appear in Moscow will not participate in international relations at Saturday’s funeral ceremony in light of the war in Ukraine and the collapse of international relations.
The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, appears in the Russian capital. It is the first visit by a Western leader to the country since Russia’s attack on Ukraine. According to Nexta, former Reagan adviser Suzanne Massey and US Ambassador John Sullivan also participated in the ceremony.
Mikhail Gorbachev is dead. Funeral of the former president of the USSR
The last leader of the Soviet Union died after a difficult time disease at the age of 91 years.
Mikhail Gorbachev became head of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1985, thus becoming the youngest member of the Politburo (he was 54 at the time). Soon he initiated policies called “glasnost” and “perestroika”. Failed attempts to reform the Soviet system within a few years led to de facto freedom of speech and media freedom in the Soviet Union, and then the introduction of parliamentarism and the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union.
In February 1990, Mikhail Gorbachev was elected president of the Soviet Union, becoming the first and last person to hold this position. In the same year he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
He relinquished the presidency in December 1991, when the leaders of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus – who had declared their independence – signed the Belovezhskaya Treaty – an agreement on the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the creation of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
After leaving the political scene, Mikhail Gorbachev founded and headed the “Gorbachev Foundation”. This organization studies the history of Russia and the world. In 1996, he took part in the presidential election in Russia, gaining more than half a percent of the vote.
