They study even during the holidays. Ukrainian children practice Czech at summer camp

The association helps children fleeing war in Ukraine in the spring, offering a fun science club for free. And he wants to continue to help even during the holidays, in the form of adaptation camps.

Those who are interested can join them not only in the capital, but also in Pardubice, Rakovník or Havířov. Children go to morning or evening programs, some of them stay for both and spend the whole day in groups.

More than 30,000 Ukrainian children participate in language and adaptation courses

Science and school

“The camp is divided separately for kindergarten children between the ages of 3 and 6 and for schoolchildren between the ages of 6 and 15,” said Lenka echová, one of the coordinators of the national organization Science is fun for us.

“The conditions for entry are exactly the same as for Czech children. They have to be participants in health insurance, the Czech state is helping refugees with that now, that shouldn’t be a problem. Furthermore, parents have to make sure to us that the children are infection-free and have no any infectious disease,” explains echová. Masks are not mandatory in place.

For example, in Prague, the Sázavská Primary School, where one of the holiday events takes place, has up to thirty children each day.

According to the lecturers, they came to the Czech Republic mainly from Kyiv and its surroundings. Some of them have successfully participated in teaching at the school with us, some are just waiting since September.

Nearly half of Ukrainian children do not enroll in Czech schools

“Our main goal is to teach children the Czech language better, to socialize them into the Czech collective and to prepare them for possible school attendance. And the program fits that well too,” explains the coordinator.

The children have fun with the games, the lecturers show them simple scientific experiments, and the already mentioned teaching of the Czech language plays a big role.

“They mainly learn it in a fun way. We don’t want children to sit in class and receive dictation. Above all, they always speak Czech, so they learn the language better,” adds echová.

If needed, lecturers who are fluent in Ukrainian are always available.

“The interest in the camp is huge, but we still have the last few places available. Especially in big cities like Prague, Brno and Ostrava,” concluded the coordinator.

According to him, parents of Ukrainian refugees do not have to pay for the activity, they are financed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.
