Nicola Sturgeon, 52, was arrested as a suspect. Police are investigating how £600,000, intended for the Scottish National Party’s independence campaign, was spent.
AFP quoted a statement from the opposition which did not escape criticism of the SNP leadership. Scottish Labor MP and Shadow Secretary of State Ian Murray said that for too long a culture of secrecy and cover-up had thrived at the heart of the Scottish National Party. However, the leader of the Liberal Democrat Party in Scotland, Alex Cole-Hamilton, said the event would have a major impact on both the SNP and the entire politics of this country.
Nicola Sturgeon arrested
Previously, the former prime minister’s home in Glasgow and his headquarters in Edinburgh were searched over the group’s funding. Sturgeon’s husband, Peter Murrell, who was the SNP’s chief executive for many years, and former party treasurer Colin Beattie were also arrested a few weeks ago as part of the same investigation.
Both men were later released without charge pending further investigation. In February, Sturgeon resigned from the Scottish government and her party.
