Last weekend, the world championship of the popular computer game “League of Legends” took place in South Korea. In collaboration with American gaming company Riot Games, which is behind “League of Legends,” Norway’s The Future Group put on a live Augmented Reality (AR) show for 25,000 people gathered at Incheon Munhak Stadium to watch the world’s biggest e-sports . incident.
AR technology from the Norwegian company helped place virtual game characters on stage during the opening ceremony and during the stage performances of artists Madison Beer and Jaira Burns.

– This project in South Korea goes into a series of things we have never done before, but at the same time we are very clear about what is in our technology – the ability to produce high-quality AR characters outdoors, with full and simultaneous “tracking” with a physical stage show, Halvor Vislie, general manager of The Future Group, told Kampanje.

The show has more than 200 million concurrent viewers, which also makes it the most watched game show. It said that more than 198 million viewers were Chinese.
– This has been a very exciting process for us, and during the fall we have completed many projects that have “pushed” our technology and creative talents to new limits, says Vislie.
– How is the revenue at an event of this size?
– A project of this size brought us several million in revenue, and the marketing impact was also significant, answered Vislie.

He said that e-sports was a focus area for the company, which was also behind the entertainment program “Lost In Time”, which only aired one season on Norwegian TV due to technical problems and low viewership.

Future Group since spring 2018 has implemented a number of large international projects. They, among other things, delivered an AR project in collaboration with The Weather Channel in the US, when Hurricane Florence hit. The broadcast received great attention, and more than 500 million views.
It also has close cooperation with Chinese state channel CCTV, which has bought several licenses from the Norwegian company, including for broadcasts of this summer’s soccer World Cup in China.
According to Vislie, The Future Group is now receiving great interest from players in Asia.
And this is good news for companies experiencing difficulties spring and summer period with extensive restructuring and significant reductions on staff.
