(Elbil24): Earlier in September, Elbil24 wrote about a new driver’s license. Starting September 1, everyone who orders a new SIM will receive a completely new version – with a unique QR code and serial number.

At the same time, the pink plastic laminated paper SIM is coming to an end. It will become invalid from January 1, 2023.

This means that all Norwegians who have such a SIM will have to renew their SIM before that time – if you really want to keep your SIM.

At least 79,204 SIM

In a press release, the Norwegian Public Road Administration wrote that many people were affected by the changes. In fact, there were as many as 79,204 people under the age of 80 who still had a plastic-laminated pink paper driver’s license issued between April 1, 1979 and January 1, 1998.

Those aged 80 years or over must renew their driver’s license with a health certificate, and are therefore not included in the number stated. But they have the same deadline for exchanging their old SIM as anyone else who wants to keep their SIM over the New Year.

In other words, there will probably be more than 80,000 Norwegians renewing their driver’s licenses in the near future.

The new driver’s license that is now being issued is manufactured in polycarbonate and has the same format as the current SIM – the size of a credit card. They have QR codes, unique serial numbers, optical variable security elements and security patterns.

– The new SIM design provides increased security against counterfeiting and is easier to check, says senior engineer John Erik Kristiansen at the National Road Administration.

The SIM also has a new design with the national emblem placed in the top left corner and printed with optical variable ink that changes from green to blue when the card is viewed from different angles.

– On the front of the SIM there will be two identical photos, one in a small size and another in a larger version of the holder. This will contribute to easier card authenticity control, Kristiansen said.
