Ruud beat France’s Laurent Lokoli in the first round of this year’s edition of the tournament on grass in London. With it, he achieved his and his family’s second win in Wimbledon history. Christian Ruud’s father and coach have never won a match in a main draw as an active player. Five times there was a way out in the first half. This is the only Grand Slam tournament in which he does not have a win.
The Ruud family’s stats on the famous turf in the London district of Wimbledon are sometimes the topic of conversation within the group, Casper said after Monday’s win.
– I feel happy. I’m happy to qualify for the 2nd round. Every win for me and the Ruud family at Wimbledon means a lot. It’s kind of a bonus, because we don’t have that many of them. “We joked a bit in the family that we had bad stats at Wimbledon, so every win we get here is huge for us,” Ruud told NTB.
Five games
Ruud himself has won two matches out of five attempts in the main draw. Thus, he naturally also had the 2nd round as the best result of the tournament.
He explains that he doesn’t feel a lot of pressure playing grass tournaments. Ruud is the best on clay courts, and in recent years he has started to do well on hard courts as well. He hasn’t mastered the grass yet.
– I myself clearly know that I am not a lawn specialist. I’ve said it many times and should probably say it more often. I just have fun while I’m out there. I don’t feel a lot of pressure, Ruud said.
Meets home expectations
In the 2nd round, 29-year-old Liam Broady waited. He is ranked 142 in the world and received a wildcard in this year’s edition of the tournament. The match will be played on Wednesday.
– England fans are usually very respectful and especially here at Wimbledon. There was applause and cheers but for the most part it was very quiet. They have a very special label here. “This is one of the easiest fans to deal with, so I don’t think there will be any problems,” said world number four Ruud.
He had to try to stay calm, even though his voice level was loud at times.
– I just hope they support him the most and that’s totally fair and natural. I’m just going to focus on mine and let the racket work. It will sound harsh sometimes, but I will try to respect it when it happens, said Ruud.
