scandal: – His career is not over yet

The Academy Oscars board came Friday night with news that actor Will Smith, 53, will be denied participation in the Oscars for the next ten years, after he beat comedian Chris Rock, 57, on stage.

Banned for ten years

Now Christopher Pahle, film critic at Dagbladet, shares his thoughts on the Oscar Academy decision.

– I kind of think that the academy felt that they had to do something, even though he had already resigned. “In that sense, there’s not much difference, but I guess they’ll also mark that they’re distancing themselves, so he’s not completely ahead,” Pahle said in the introduction.

– Unbelievably big

According to Pahle, Smith is considered one of the biggest film stars in the world, and began his career in, among other things, the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”. He has also been seen in a number of major films and has been seen as an action hero in Hollywood.

– That’s what makes this so great. He hunted statues for 30 years, he had a refined image throughout the years, and had been considered a good and stable man. But then this happened 15 minutes before he accepted the award, Pahle said.

– Does that mean he’s banned now?

– He’s already resigned, which means he can’t vote on distribution. Now that he was banned, he could not participate in the actual distribution or other events that were under the auspices of the academy. It’s still unclear if he can still be nominated for an Oscar, but he will keep the statue.

Now, however, many are wondering if this will be the end of Smith’s years-long film career. Pahle, on the other hand, insists that is not true.

– I’m sure he still wants a film career. You always see that people love a good comeback story. And he has played cards well after this. He had complained, and now said he accepted the academy’s decision. So he’s a repentant sinner and people like that, Pahle said.

– He will be filming the postponed “Bad Boys 4”, like other projects. But it will probably recover in the end. The image will change, but there are still many who do far worse things than this, he added.

– The scandal of the times

When asked if Pahle had seen anything akin to the Oscar scandal, he replied as follows:

– It’s huge, we can say it’s entertainment news, but it has a bigger meaning beyond itself. He’s a representative of the minority, so there’s little to say there, he said, adding:

– Besides, it was filmed live, so at the moment I don’t come to a similar show. These are scandalous times.

– Did he receive a lot of support or reactions?

– I think it’s divided enough. My impression was that he had a lot of support in the beginning, but then changed a bit. Many have supported humanity, but most have distanced themselves from the action. Even those who might understand it to some degree. Rock has also been criticized, as well as the broadcast itself.
