Sixteen-year-old tennis player Linda Fruhvirt advanced to the 3rd round at her premiere at the elite category tournament in Miami. The Czechs, who started the main competition thanks to wild cards, defeated twentieth Belgian Elise Mertens 7:5, 2:6, 6:1. Petra Kvitová who initially played in a free draw also made it into the tournament. She beat Clara Burel of France 6:1, 3:6, 6:3.
The older of the sister duo Fruhvirt entered the first game with players from the top fifty in the world nervous and lost the opening gem on his serve in a clean game. But then he knocked, his 24th-placed opponent in the WTA hit the break straight away and won an even first set thanks to another breakball converted in 47 minutes.
He also entered the second set with a loss of serve, but this time he was unable to reverse the score. He lost serve once again and had to fight for promotion in the third set. In it, he did not allow Mertens to play a gem from 1:1 and won the most valuable victory of his career so far.
After a great performance in the first set, Kvitová started to make more mistakes, he failed to serve and his opponent was able to capitalize on them. However, early in the decisive third set, the two-time Wimbledon champions avoided two breakballs and put the game back under control. He took a 3:1 lead and was not stopped even by losing serve in the fifth game, where he was able to quickly respond with another break.
In the 3rd round, Kvitová’s 28th seed, American Lauren Davis, was waiting. Fruhvirt will face an even better duel between Victoria Azarenko of Belarus and Ekaterina Alexandrov of Russia.
Markéta Vondroušová will not be performing in Miami. The Czech, who got a free draw on the 30th, withdrew from the tournament due to illness and will be replaced by the losing qualifier.
