– 3.6 billion people live in energy poverty. They receive too little of the world’s energy funding, even though they represent half of the world’s population, Støre told NTB.
He has agreed to join the “Global Energy Alliance for People and the Planet” and will chair the global board of the alliance. It became known during the UN General Assembly in New York.
The aim of this alliance is for more people in poor countries to have access to electricity, and this should happen through the development of renewable energy rather than fossil energy.
– This is a collaboration between private and public capital, with investment in developing countries to start with concrete renewable projects, said the prime minister.
His role will primarily be to lead the global leadership forum in alliances, with leaders from the financial and political sectors.
– We must do more to increase the pace of renewable energy investment in developing countries. Access to energy is necessary for health, education and business to create jobs and growth. It’s also critical to achieving climate goals, Støre said.
The alliance aims to create 150 million new jobs, avoid 4 gigatons of future CO2 emissions and strengthen access to energy for one billion people, the Prime Minister’s office said.
