A giant sunfish found on a Portuguese island has officially broken a new world record.
The fish, weighing nearly three tons, is the world’s heaviest bony fish on record, according to the Jam Press news agency.
The creature weighs 2,744 kilograms, and was discovered in late 2021. Just last week there was confirmation of the world record.
– Came suddenly and surprised
– Majestic
The fish is of the species Mola Alexandrini, also known as the southern lumpfish, or sunfish.
It was in 2021 that the dead creature was discovered on the water’s edge by the North Atlantic. The fish are collected by local authorities and brought to the port for proper inspection by scientists.
Researcher José Nuno Gomes-Pereira described the creature as a “majestic specimen”.
Cause of death unknown
Despite their enormous size, lumpfish are completely harmless to humans and prefer to eat jellyfish and small fish.
Giant lumpfish can be found anywhere in the world. However, it is not known how many there are in total. These findings have been published in Journal of Fish Biology.
It is not known how the fish died.
