Wang Mei-Hua is currently visiting the United States to address American concerns about supply chain and geopolitical issues, and will also visit technology companies that are major customers of Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturers.
According to the economy minister, Taiwan wants to increase cooperation with the US to ensure a strong supply chain, Reuters wrote.
The world’s largest chipmaker
Taiwan, which is the world’s largest semiconductor producer, is currently noticing increased military activity from China, but Wang believes China will also be affected if the “Middle Kingdom” tries to interfere in the island nation’s internal affairs. According to the minister, the world’s largest chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will shut down operations if China tries to take over operations by military force.
Wang also quoted US Secretary of State Antony Blinken as saying that if anything were to happen to Taiwan, the impact on the global economy would be “devastating”.
– I want to put it another way: if Taiwan is safe, global supply chains will be safe too. It is in Taiwan’s best interest to work with the US and other allies to maintain the most efficient production, Wang said.
Furthermore, he also said that he was not worried about American investment in semiconductor production, and pointed out that Taiwan has spent more than 40 years building their supply chain, Reuters wrote.
– We have a very large supply chain in Taiwan, which is difficult to duplicate or replace, he said.
