Marie Bouzková was not enough for Paula Badosa in the second round of the tennis tournament in Miami. He lost to the world number six from Spain 5:7, while he managed to dramatize the second set after losing 1:5. There were four Czech women in the third round: Petra Kvitová, Karolína Muchová, Kateřina Siniaková and only 16-year-old Linda Fruhvirtová.
Polka Iga wiateková has clearly enjoyed a new position at world number one since Friday. After the current world leader, Ashleigh Barty of Australia, was shocked by the announcement of the end of his career and removed from the WTA rankings, wiateková took the lead. 20-year-old Polka beat Switzerland’s Viktoria Golubicova 6:2, 6:0 in Miami in the second round.
wiateková will become the official new leader of the rankings on April 4 at the age of 20 and 308 days, the youngest being twelve years after Caroline Wozniacka of Denmark. “This is a dream come true for me. I never imagined that moment. Even though I played well, I couldn’t believe it could actually happen,” said last year’s winner Roland Garros.
Theoretically, Badosa also has a chance to attack the throne in Miami. He fulfilled the role of favorite against Bouzková, but he could no longer climb to the top of the rankings after the tournament. However, like Kvitová, he is one of the few players to “stand by” in the competition. Of the 32 deployed, 21 have dropped out, some for health reasons, such as Markéta Vondroušová.
Fruhvirtová already knows his next opponent, he will play former world number one Viktoria Azarenková of Belarus to advance to the last 16.
