A Hebrew Bible believed to be over 1,000 years old is up for auction.
The Bible, which has been given the name “Codex Sasson”, is believed to be the first and most complete Hebrew Bible ever.
Between 22 and 28 February, the Bible will be on display at Sotheby’s London auction house. After this, it will tour the exhibition to Israel and the United States.
In May 2023, the historic Bible will be auctioned in New York. If you want to get one, you will hopefully have to pay between NOK 300 and 500 million.
Very important
The Bible has had very little public access until now, said a press release from Sotheby’s in early February.
– This is the most important document ever auctioned, books and manuscripts specialist at Sotheby’s, Sharon Mintz, told CNN.
– This is also the most important document that I have ever read, examined and handled with pleasure, he added.
– The Bible is one of the world’s greatest treasures and has had a huge impact on the three monotheistic religions and their billions of followers, he said Sotheby’s own website.
It is named after David Sasson, who was said to have been a collector of Hebrew Bibles between 1840 and 1942.
Made of animal skin
The Bible is more than 1,000 years old consisting of 792 pages made of animal skins. The book weighs about twelve kilograms.
Book experts explain that the Bible was so expensively made that only very wealthy people could afford it.
The current owner purchased the “Codex Sasson” in 1989, and has said through an auctioneer that he is now happy to be able to share it with the rest of the world.
