After a ruthless Norwegian performance, England finally won 8-0 and made Norway the laughing stock of the entire football world.
The match entered the history books with a negative sign for the Norwegian women’s national team.
– What a shame
The 0-8 loss was the biggest loss in the history of Norwegian women’s football.
– This is really embarrassing. “Not in my wildest imagination did I imagine that this could be the scenario,” said NRK commentator Andreas Stabrun Smith sadly as the team went into the break.
– It’s just a little girl against a senior. It’s sad to see that, said NRK expert Carl-Erik Torp.
National team manager Martin Sjögren was in a state of disrepair after a crushing defeat.
– It hurts to stand out there and feel helpless. Above all, I suffered with the players. We have higher ambitions with this match. We started well, but then we deviated from concept and played the ball back. We invite them to put very hard pressure on us. “We faced a good English team, but we did better than we needed to,” Sjögren told NRK after the game.
He faced harsh criticism for his own match management on Monday:
– One of the most embarrassing things
Stabrun Smith and Torp were not alone in reacting after that woeful display.
Soccer-Norway marveled at the humiliation of the English stars.
– This is one of the most embarrassing things I have ever seen from the Norwegian national team. Completely devoid of offensive play on its own. Completely devoid of defensive structures – and besides, many players look terrified. It couldn’t have been any worse, wrote football pundit Lars Tjærnås on Twitter after the Norwegian nightmare round.
– I have a pretty good memory. I’m close to 48 years old, I’ve been a sports idiot since I was 4-5 years old. From everything to do with the Norwegian national team: Football, handball, bandy, indoor bandy, all para sports – I have never seen the Norwegian national team spoiled more. This is a pure horror film. It’s a horror film mixed with paralysis action, says Aleksander Schau.
Captain: – Feels quite small
National team captain Maren Mjelde was very disappointed after the game.
– You feel quite small now. We were punished very badly but it wasn’t good enough, we just had to admit it, he told NRK.
– There were six goals in the first half, what happened behind that?
– I felt we opened the game well, and had a good push, but were punished very hard. Then we got a penalty kick against us, and then I felt that we were falling. I felt we gave it to them in important situations, and then we weren’t good enough in our own box. No, that’s not good enough, Mjelde said.
Ada Hegerberg is also far behind after 0-8 against England.
– This is very new, and I don’t have all the answers. We started really well and put them under pressure, but then the first goal came and after that it started to flow. We can’t stop that, he said, according to NTB.
– It’s tough and brutal.
Still hoping for the quarter-finals
After Norway’s defeat against England, and considering Austria’s win against Northern Ireland the night before, it’s clear that it will be the direct final for the quarter-final ticket between Norway and Austria when the two teams meet on Friday.
Since Norway lost by more than two goals against England, Hegerberg & co. now win against Austria to advance to the quarter-finals.
If they lose or draw on Friday’s match, the Norwegian girls are eliminated from the championship. The reason, Austria will later qualify with a total goal difference in the group if it ends in a draw in the last match.
How far will Norway go into the EC?
Cheap penalty before 0-1
The match was only ten minutes old when England were awarded a penalty. It happened when Ellen White fell to the ground after a duel with Maria Thorisdottir.
– I think it looks cheap. Where’s the contact? Punishment alone is not enough, said NRK expert Carl-Erik Torp.
– Very cheap, adds NRK commentator Andreas Stabrun Smith.
But VAR believes that was not the so-called “clear and obvious error” and did not intervene. This allowed Georgia Stanway to send England the lead with a well-placed penalty kick.
Especially down Norway’s left flank, England created constant danger, and it didn’t take several minutes before Norway’s nightmare continued.
Lauren Hemp scored 2-0 after a quarter of an hour, a goal initially marked for offside but approved after VAR checks.
Thorisdottir Error
After less than half an hour, the pain got worse when Maria Thorisdottir scratched herself. She lost the ball as a back woman and allowed Ellen White to pass it alone with Guro Pettersen to make it 3-0.
– He can’t make mistakes like that. The ball would only be lost in one touch, Thorisdottir, it was so unnecessary, was a very clear decision from Carl-Erik Torp.
Ten minutes before the break, Beth Mead made it 4-0 when she headed in from close range after receiving a cross from the right, and the same player made it 5-0 with a simple dribble a few minutes later. Ellen White ends a period of Norwegian horror.
National team manager Martin Sjögren made one change in the first half, bringing on Guro Bergsvand and sending off Karina Sævik, and at the same time switching to the line of five defenders.
However, England and Alessia Russo made it 7-0 after 65 minutes with headers at the back post.
Ten minutes from the end, Beth Mead added to the score to 8-0, and it was also the end result of Norway’s ruthless display.
The biggest win in EC history before Monday’s game was 6-0. Thus England can celebrate a solid record and a long step towards the quarter-finals.
