In its world premiere, American actor John Malkovich will present his play The Infamous Ramirez Hoffman to the people of Prague. He performed in it alone, accompanied by musicians, as he did in July, when he brought another production to Kroměříž.
The 68-year-old actor put on a solo show, The Music Critic, at the Podzámecká Garden there, where he played a bitter music critic. The show consisted of a scathing combination of the worst reviews of classical music’s greatest works. Apart from Malkovich, there were musicians on stage playing excerpts from selected compositions. Then the actor ripped it off. Laughter was often heard from the auditorium.
Now Malkovich was going back to Prague. On November 11, Ramirez Hoffman’s The Famous production will have its world premiere at the Congress Center. He will be accompanied by violinist So-Ock Kim, Mario Stefano Pietrodarchi with bandoneon and pianist Anastasya Terenkova. The game will be played in English, tickets priced from 1,490 to 2,990 crowns are available on the Ticketportal network.
The novel is based on the motif of the last chapter of the novella Far Stars by Chilean writer Robert Bolaň, published by Argo in Czech translation by Anežka Charvátová. The narrator, with a mixture of horror and fascination, recounts several episodes from the life of the poet, whom he met in the early 1970s. This guy wrote verses in the sky on a jet plane.
The search for who this poet and war pilot really is, what art means to life, and how many other people’s lives are willing to be sacrificed for a unique work forms the backbone of a narrative that is full of twists and turns. This short novel tells of a con artist who cares only about aesthetics over any ethics, and represents another variant of Bolaň’s quest for modern forms of crime.
