Throwing himself into the leadership fight in the House of Representatives – this is the favorite – Dagsavisen

The two Republicans will likely be joined by several other candidates, and many believe the leadership battle will be long and fierce.

A major split occurred on the Republican side after a vote of no confidence from Florida representative Matt Gaetz defeated his party colleague Kevin McCarthy.

Scalise is the second-in-command in the House of Representatives and has long been the favorite to take over as Republican leader in the Assembly after McCarthy.

Jim Jordan is chairman of the Judiciary Committee and is considered one of former President Donald Trump’s allies. In January, he ran as a candidate against Kevin McCarthy, but received only 20 votes in one round.

McCarthy’s ouster on Monday was a historic event, as it was the first time the leader of the House of Representatives was ousted mid-term. The office is considered the third most important in the US state apparatus, after the president and vice president.

Republicans plan to vote on October 11.

News agency Reuters points to these seven as favorites:

Steve Scalise

He is the second-in-command in the House of Representatives and has long been the favorite to take over as Republican leader in the Assembly after McCarthy.

Tom Emmer

Today he is a whipper. Last year led the Republican Party’s election campaign in the midterm elections, which ended with the Republican Party securing a majority in the House of Representatives.

Jim Jordan

Chairman of the Judiciary Committee and former ally of former President Donald Trump. In January, he ran as a candidate against Kevin McCarthy, but received only 20 votes in one round.

Byron Donalds

Is on the right wing and is considered a rising star in the Republican Party. He also received 20 votes in one of the previous rounds of the chairman election.

Patrick McHenry

Acting speaker until a new person is elected. Chairs the finance committee. McHenry was among those who supported the previous speaker, Kevin McCarthy.

Donald Trump

Historically, only members of the DPR have been elected as speaker. But this is not in the constitution, and some Trump supporters believe he is the right person for the position.

Haakem Jeffries

Democratic and minority leaders in the House. When McCarthy was elected in January, Jeffries received more votes than McCarthy in 11 of 15 races.
