Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was fined by a court in Malmö on Monday for disobeying a police order to leave during last month’s oil terminal blockade. This was reported by the Reuters office with reference to the Swedish media. Thunberg says he is innocent.
The world-famous activist was a member of the group of protesters who blocked the road leading to the oil terminal in the Swedish port of Malmö. Prosecutors accused him of refusing to comply with police orders to leave the scene.
Thunberg acknowledged that she participated in the protest and that she disobeyed police orders. However, he has maintained his innocence and that he acted out of necessity.
“My actions were justified,” Sydsvenskan was quoted as saying. “I believe we are in an extraordinary situation that threatens life, health and property. Many people and communities are at risk in both the short and long term,” he added.
The amount of the fine will depend on Thunberg’s reported income. It was not immediately clear how much he would have to pay.
Thunberg became world famous at the age of 15 when she sat before the Stockholm parliament in 2018 to demand tougher climate protections from Swedish politicians. The Swedish youth, who is an outspoken supporter of ending the world’s dependence on energy from fossil fuels, went on to inspire a global environmental movement advocating for stronger climate and environmental protection.
