– They knew that Wałęsa was a good man and they also knew that I had no idea that Russia would not allow what I wanted. He would not allow to withdraw from the Warsaw Pact, to expel communism, if he tried, a third of the Polish nation would die. And they will die for not looking after Wałęsa – the former president told Onet.
What Walesa what do you think about the army in the Polish People’s Republic?
The former Solidarity leader said that the Polish People’s Republic soldiers were “unhappy people, betrayed in 1939 by the West, and then in 1945 also by the West, who gave us to the Soviets to fight gloriously during World War II.” Recalling that time, Wałęsa said he wanted to speak to the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party, Wojciech Jaruzelski, at the start of martial law. However, the conversation did not take place. Instead, Wałęsa then went into discussion with the generals and soldiers, asking why they were helping the commune.
“If there are riots in Gdańsk (…). Just one button press”
– And they say to me: “Sir, when we finished our public school in Russia, we were shown a room with two mock-ups.” And they went on to say that if there is a problem in Gdańsk, it is enough to press a button to leave a hole in Gdańsk. And they know it all – Wałęsa told Onet.
Walesa remember that he “struggled” knowing that “it could end tragically”
Martial law itself was billed by the former president as a “who-what” fight. – I fought like that and today I am the winner, and those who caught me are the losers, added Wałęsa in an interview with Onet. He also stated that he “struggled, realizing with whom and how it could end, even tragically.”
