According to the Reuters news agency, former Russian president and prime minister Dmitry Medvedev came with a warning:
– If nuclear power loses a conventional war, it can trigger a nuclear war, said Medvedev, who is now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council.
The world’s largest
Russia has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world. based on Federation of American Scientists has landed 5,977 nuclear warheads, against the US’s 5,428.
Take over if Putin dies
During the Ukrainian war, Medvedev made a number of far-reaching proposals, including about image of the border after the Russian victory in conflict.
The 57-year-old man shared on his Telegram account a map where Ukraine was almost wiped out. While Russia had captured most of the territory, the rest was divided between Poland, Hungary and Romania. Only a small portion around Kyiv remains Ukrainian.
– Played the role
Medvedev took over the presidency from Vladimir Putin in 2008, until the latter returned and the two switched positions as president and prime minister in 2012.
The 57-year-old has served as co-chair of the Security Council since 2020. Jakub M. Gozimirski, Russia researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Foreign Policy (NUPI), told Dagbladet this summer that he now appears as a strange figure.
– As president, he headed Russia’s liberal project, but now he is making statements that inflame the conflict with Ukraine. He has played his part in Russian politics, and no one takes him seriously, said Godzimirski.
During a press conference in the Kremlin later in the day, however, a government spokesman said that Medvedev’s statement was fully consistent with the official Russian line on nuclear weapons.
