War repairs. Archbishop Gądecki: Forgiveness must be accompanied by justice
A statement on the matter was issued on Saturday by the head of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki.
As the pastor puts it, the issues raised in the report published on Thursday “must be considered in the context of the long-term process of Polish-German reconciliation.” In this way, he refers to a letter from a Polish bishop to a German bishop from 1965, in which “they give pardons and ask for forgiveness.”
“Years later, we can say that the document turned out to be prophetic. This started the process of reconciliation between Poland and Germany, without neglecting the crimes committed, without forgetting the victims and without covering the sense of harm suffered” – commented Archbishop Gądecki.
The chairman of the KEP also quoted in his statement the words of John Paul II, who indicated in his January 1997 message that “forgiveness in no way contradicts the search for truth, but rather demands the truth”, and “errors committed must be acknowledged and, if possible, corrected”.
“Grace and forgiveness – especially in political life – must, however, be accompanied by prudence and justice” – stressed Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki. He quotes the following words of John Paul II that “forgiveness does not eliminate or diminish the need to correct evil which is the order of justice”.
“Task Church is a reminder of the value of repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation. State institutions are called upon to decide on the practical forms of restoration of justice. Let our common desire that the two countries, Poland and Germany, at peace with each other, turn their eyes to a better future “- concluded the chairman of the Polish Bishops’ Conference.
