Warn the British

The British Meteorological Institute warns that low polar pressure could lead to low temperatures and large amounts of snow over large parts of the country.

They say that tomorrow Scotland will probably experience the coldest day of the year, temperatures in the highlands are expected to drop to around 10 degrees below zero on Monday night. North winds will make the effective temperature cooler.

– Chances are we could see some of the coldest temperatures this time of year. The lowest we saw was in January at -10.4, so we may see something lower than that, said meteorologist Honor Criswick Sky News who first mentioned this issue.

Confusing weather phenomena

– Expect fairly cold conditions

Winter weather can produce as much as 10cm of snow on Scotland’s higher elevations and 5cm on the lower elevations. A yellow warning for snow has been issued in north-east Scotland from 18:00 on Sunday.

From midnight on Sunday, a yellow snow and ice warning spread over north-west England and north-east Scotland and moved further up the east coast to Hull on Tuesday.

– We expect moderate cold conditions and snowfall over the next few days in Scotland and the north of England, said Criswick.

He said that it was not yet time to pack winter clothes for the British.

– It will feel quite cold and the wind will blow slightly so it will feel quite cold.

Foresee a severe cold weather

England’s Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) has issued a cold weather warning and has placed North East England, North West England and Yorkshire under a level three warning, with the rest of England at level two.

A level three warning means there is a 90 per cent chance of severe cold, icy conditions or heavy snow, which could increase health risks for susceptible patients, according to the NHS.
