The Canadian Soccer Federation and the women’s national team have reached a preliminary agreement
After conflict between the Canadian Soccer Federation and their women’s national team, they have now reached a tentative agreement on funding for 2022.
The terms of the agreement mirror those that apply to the men’s national team, according to the football association, with per-game incentives and performance-based compensation. The final joint agreement for the women’s and men’s national teams is still under negotiation.
– It’s about respect, it’s about dignity, and it’s about equalizing the competitive environment in a world that fundamentally treats people differently, union secretary general Earl Cochrane said in a statement.
Canada’s women’s national team are Olympic champions, but the run-up to WC this summer has been marked by a labor dispute with unions. The conflict was primarily about discrimination.
In February, the national team played the “SheBelieves Cup” in protest after being told that if they boycotted the tournament they would face legal action.
On Monday, soccer president Nick Bontis stepped down in favor of the women’s national team.
