– It’s a top spot thanks to top models, says David Gutteridge, satisfied winner of NM’s first round of Underwater Photography.
Photos of his dive buddy Afif Tabbara contributed greatly to his rampage in the wide-angle class, where he placed 1st, 4th and 5th.

This achievement is even more impressive considering that photographers can only submit three photos in one class. They were also able to submit three macro images, for which Gutteridge was awarded tenth place.
– Macro is hard, a lot because I always have the “wrong” lens. Macro motives are never enough, he says with a laugh.

A favorite lens is the 8-15mm fisheye, a versatile wide-angle lens that offers some flexibility thanks to the zoom option.
The photos of shipwrecks he takes continue to attract attention, as he uses a very special technique to illuminate them – and many people wonder how he did it.

With the help of long shutter speeds, a tripod, and a light, he brings out image quality that few or no others emulate.
– I paint with light. When you use a long shutter speed, you can use the lantern to light up the wreck exactly how you want, he told Dykking.
