Liverpool-born defender Max Thompson signed a professional contract with the club in 1973, and then made his debut aged 17 years and 129 days in the last game of the 1973/74 season against Tottenham.
The match would also become a Liverpool legend and coach Bill Shankly’s last game in charge of the club.
That made him the youngest Premier League debutant in the club’s history. A record that stood for 36 years, when Jack Robinson made his debut as a 16-year-old against Hull City in 2010.

It hasn’t been a great Liverpool career for Thompson, who earned just two A-team games for his boyhood club. After his debut, he had his second game as a substitute against Real Sociedad in the 1975/76 UEFA Cup, before going on loan to the Dallas Tornado and Blackpool twice.
He then signed permanently for the latter in 1978. In addition, there were matches at Swansea City, Bournemouth and several clubs in the United States, Portugal and Sweden.
After his playing career, Thompson took a course on football injuries and returned to Liverpool as a physiotherapist, in the early 1990s.
