Tuesday, May 23, 1978. Czechoslovakia will experience a hitherto unknown drama. Three cousins, Robert, Milan and Václav Bareš, kidnap a bus full of children and try to cross the country's Iron Curtain border into West Germany. Escapism should bring freedom to the younger generation. And literally. Less than four months later, Milan was again facing prison time. He got a one and a half year sentence for stealing chats.

Three armed men boarded a school bus near Cheb, seated students by the windows like human shields, threatened massacre, and spent hours negotiating with border guards at the border crossing to the west of the city to gain entry. However, they wanted to stop the kidnapper at all costs and prepared a trap.
When the men, believing that there were only a few tens of meters left to Germany, freed the hostages, border guards set up roadblocks and armored personnel carriers in the area between the customs office and the third barrier. At the same time, as the bus approached, they opened fire fiercely.
