The Toyota GR Yaris is official: This beast born for fun has four wheels and the most powerful three cylinders in the world

This Japanese car manufacturer has been teasing us for some time with new sports equipment, this time inspired by the world of WRC. Today we finally get it, the GR Yaris is no longer a secret.

In recent years, the Toyota brand has favored sports cars that can be used on ordinary roads. After a delightful little thing called the Yaris GRMN, the long-awaited Supra followed. But the Japanese brand also did not stop there and today officially presented its highly anticipated novelty – GR Yarisa sharp version of the small hatchback inspired by the World Rally Championship.

And fortunately, the new product will offer everything that was previously expected – a six-speed manual transmission, all-wheel drive and a 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine tuned to produce 192 kW of power and 360 newton meters of torque. Yes, this is the most powerful three-cylinder engine ever to appear in series production. Toyota says the small car can accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in less than 5.5 seconds and can continue to an electronically limited top speed of 230 km/h. All this while maintaining a decent body weight of 1,280 kilograms.

Toyota built this exclusive three-door car based on its experience and knowledge from the world of WRC. The car relies heavily on carbon fiber and aluminum to reduce its weight. While the standard Yaris gets torsion bars at the rear, the sport variant has a more sophisticated solution with double wishbones. Also unique is the platform, which incorporates a GA-B architecture front (the new Yaris has it here), while the rear is GA-C.

For an additional fee, two Torsen differentials also contribute to optimal driving characteristics, as well as standard four-wheel drive, which changes the distribution ratio to the axles depending on the driving mode. If in normal conditions we talk about a 60/40 distribution, in sport the distribution is 30/70 for the rear wheels. Track mode, on the other hand, offers a 50/50 distribution. However, Toyota says, depending on needs, the system can send full torque to the front or rear wheels.

The GR Yaris comes with a unique appearance, apart from modified body design elements, the roof is lowered by 91 millimeters which is now claimed to be reminiscent of a coupe shape, as well as frameless windows. The eighteen inch black wheels are the icing on the cake.

Toyota takes the development of sports cars seriously, in Motomachi for this purpose they set up a new production line only for the GR model. All that remains is to look forward to the first ride, this machine is sure to offer a lot of fun!
