Davos – The Russian invasion of Ukraine may mark the start of World War III. At the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, American billionaire and Hungarian philanthropist George Soros said this today. The best way to preserve a free civilization, he said, is to defeat Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was reported by Reuters news agency.
The 91-year-old Soros describes the war in Ukraine as part of a wider struggle between open societies based on respect for human rights, transparent public administration and the rule of law, and closed societies like China and Russia. At the same time, closed companies are on the rise, according to Soros.
“The invasion may be the beginning of World War III, and our civilization may not survive,” said the text of Soros’ speech, released by his office. “The best and perhaps the only way to preserve our civilization is to defeat Putin as soon as possible. That is the most important thing,” the financier added, according to the published text. “I can’t predict the result, but Ukraine definitely has a chance to win.”
According to Soros, Putin now views the invasion as a mistake and is preparing to negotiate a ceasefire. “However, a truce cannot be reached because it cannot be trusted,” Soros thought. “The weaker Putin is, the more unpredictable his behavior becomes,” he explained.
According to Soros, the European Union must understand that the Russian president can cut off Russian natural gas supplies “provided it is really detrimental”. Russian gas currently meets about 40 percent of Europe’s needs.
Putin described the invasion as a “special operation”. According to him, the United States is using Ukraine to threaten Russia through NATO expansion. Moscow should intervene against the persecution of the Russian-speaking population, claims the Russian president. Ukraine and its Western allies reject this claim as a baseless pretext for attacking a sovereign nation.
Soros identified Russia, the world’s largest country by area, and China, the world’s second largest economy, as leading members of an emerging closed society group in which individuals are subordinate to the state.
“The repressive regime is now on the rise and open society is under siege,” Soros said. “The biggest threats to open society today are China and Russia,” he added.
