Russian President Vladimir Putin offered his deepest condolences after Gorbachev’s death. He did so through his spokesman in the Kremlin on Tuesday evening, Reuters reports.
The end of the Cold War
Gorbachev is known, among other things, as the political leader who dissolved the Soviet Union, thereby helping to end the Cold War.
The communist Soviet Union was founded by the Bolsheviks on December 30, 1922 and thus dissolved on December 26, 1991.
Gorbachev tried to create a more open and democratic Soviet Union, but with his perestroika and glasnost (restructuring and openness) unleashed an unstoppable power.
As a result, the guild he led ceased to exist, and he ended up having to give up power.
Nobel Peace Prize
The previous year, 1990, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
– He was very important in ending the Cold War, Nupi researcher and Russia expert Julie Wilhelmsen told NTB.
– His personal desire to use the power he has brought with him to disarm him, and to take the first steps himself, before the United States and then President Ronald Reagan will respond, is absolutely decisive, he believes.
– People often wonder how important a person is in world politics, but in this particular case I believe that his vision is very important, says Wilhelmsen.
