(Martina Trevisian – Malene Helgø 7–5, 3–6, 6–4)(Lorenzo Musetti – Viktor Durasovic 7–6, 6–3) For more than three hours, Malene Helgø (23) caused trouble for Italy’s Martina Trevisian, but in the end it was the world number 27 who was able to cheer for victory. Viktor Durasovic (25) also suffered an honorable defeat.
Malene Helgø is ranked as the 321st best tennis player in women’s singles, and is closing in on the biggest scalp of his career in Australia on Monday night in Norway.
After all, the game kicked off on a Monday night, but three hours and two minutes later, night had turned to day here at home. Then the marathon match in Brisbane also ended, with a narrow defeat for Helgø.
– It was an amazing match. A very long battle. It was a very difficult match, because I had never played against him before. He was very smart and fast, and made it difficult for me to play my game, Trevisian told organizers in an interview that aired on VG+ Sports.
Trevisian – who was in the semifinals of the French Open last season – won the first set 7–5, before Helgø replied with a resounding 6–3 victory in the second. In the third and decisive set, the Italian secured victory by a score of 6–4.
– Heartbroken for Helgø. It would be the biggest win of his career. The win would send him into the top 300. Hopefully the time will come, said the British commentator.
Helgo has for a long time the desire to fulfill the tennis dream, which has not yet reached full speed. As of 2015, she is the youngest ever to win the King’s Cup in tennis, and she has a total of six NM gold medals.
The 23-year-old made her debut on the WTA tour in a straight sets loss against Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia on New Year’s Eve.
After the Helgø match, it was Viktor Durasovic who would be in action for Norway. He faced Lorenzo Musetti who is ranked 23 in the world.
Durasovic, Norway’s second-best tennis player in the men’s team, is ranked 343 in the world, and like Helgø, the 25-year-old impressed.
In the first game he held Musetti in a tie break, but there Musetti won. With a 6–3 victory for the Italian in the second set, it ended in a straight sets defeat to Durasovic.
Norwegian lost 1–4 to Brazil in the first game of the United Cup national team tournament, and thus had to beat Italy in the second to progress from the group stage in the first edition of the tournament where only the group winners progressed to the play-offs.
The game between Helgø and Trevisian kicks off the international clash between Norway and Italy, before Viktor Durasovic and Lorenzo Musetti play the second and final game on Monday.
With a 2-0 lead over Italy after the first two matches, Norway should win three of their three games on Tuesday.
