– I was afraid the fire department would think it was silly or look sad when I got there but they really cared about the crow.
– The firefighters were really worried the bird would be okay and gave me lots of good advice when I took him to the vet. They said I had to remember to put something on top of the cage, so it wouldn’t be stressed in the car, Line-Irene Berg told iTromsø.
On Monday afternoon, he moved from his home in Skittenelv after receiving a message that a crow had become entangled in a tree in Kaldslett after becoming entangled in a nylon rope.
Together with Nathalie Theodorsen, Berg runs the Facebook page Fuglehjelp Tromsø, where you can provide advice on birds in need.
– We got a tip that the crow was hanging there by one leg. Center 110 was called while I got in the car to drive south, he said.
– When I arrived, firefighters were already on site working to get the bird down. It’s really cool that they’re so “on the cutting edge” and they take issues like that seriously, he added.
Measured to the vet
While the other crows in the flock tried to protect the poor bird, the firefighters and Berg tried to remove the nylon thread that was wrapped around its leg.
– The rope wrapped around the leg so well, we couldn’t untie it, he said.
Therefore, the journey continues to Anicura in Stakkevollvegen.
– The crow is clearly affected and tired, so it’s good to have it checked. We don’t know how long he was hanging there, said Berg.
Back with the wrapper
Berg packed the crow’s cage in the car and headed for the vet.
– He gets very stressed, but calms down whenever I talk to him. They are interesting animals, he said.
Once at the vet, the rope was removed and the bird was examined.
– They found that he was in good shape. He was allowed to rest briefly and fetch water, before traveling back to Kaldslett, where he was released again, Berg said.
– Crows are very territorial, so I can’t let them go anywhere. He was eager to get back in the pack when we arrived, I didn’t have to wait long before he flew out, he added.
– Life is life
Inge Jakobsen, task leader at Tromsø fire and rescue, says she and the rest of the gang at the fire station are happy to step in and help when they have the chance.
– Life is life, and no one should suffer unnecessarily, he said.
He said that the fire department first got out in a car without a lift, but when they arrived at Kaldslett, they saw that they couldn’t get the bird down with the stairs.
– Then we called for a ride, took two people and a cage and put the crow down. It’s good that it goes well, he said.
