– The conflict in Yemen is one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, and the shortage of funds for emergency aid is greater than ever. Many families now have to sell their last possessions to buy food, said Scott M. Sandvik, senior adviser at the Red Cross, in a press release.
In February, a major donor conference was held for Yemen. There it was promised 1.2 billion dollars – a record low amount, according to the Red Cross. The United Nations estimates that this corresponds to a third of the money needed to make ends meet.
The ceasefire, prisoner swaps and better relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran in recent months fueled hopes that the war in Yemen could end. But the need for assistance and emergency assistance is still very large.
– Yemen is one of the countries that is getting more difficult because of the war in Europe. The country is completely dependent on imported goods and has been hit hard by rising prices, said Sandvik.
He added that there had been a sharp decline over the years in international support for the country.
