Fire in the Champions League! Oh my God, what fun! After wins against league champions from Bulgaria, Belgium and Scotland in qualifying, we are in the group stage of the biggest club tournament in the world. The opponents are Slavia Prague, Lyon and St. Petersburg. The first is a team from Austria.
City of St. Pölten is an hour’s drive from Vienna and has a population of no more than 50,000 people. However, their football team has won the series eight years in a row, and it appears a ninth title is just around the corner. They started the season well, with eight wins in the first eight games.
This series has also resulted in matches in the Champions League several times. Last year they reached the group stages, where they faced Wolfsburg, Roma and Slavia Prague. They picked up points in both games against Slavia Prague, but after defeats to Roma and Wolfsburg, they are still far from qualifying from the group.
This time, the dream of progress may seem a little more attainable. Lyon is the favorite to win the group, while the race for second place is more open. Despite being a more experienced team from the Champions League, it is not an impossible task to bring home points to Bergen. The Norwegian league is ranked slightly higher than the Austrian league.
Brann has shown good form this fall, despite losing badly against Lyn in the previous round. Unfortunately, there are no medals, so there is only one way to participate in Europe next year: Brann must win the Champions League. We will take the first step towards that goal in St. Louis. Pölten on Tuesday. Hello Fire!
