The wettest country – like 25 meters of snow

The country’s wettest city gets wetter in the extreme weather year 2022.

Since measurements at the Vassvatnet station in the municipality of Lury in Nordland began 99 years ago, larger amounts of rainfall have been measured in the first seven months of the year in early August, reports Helgeland Blad.

15 year floodis a characteristic of NVE.

As of July 31, 2,308 millimeters of rain had fallen on Lurøy on the Helgeland coast.

Measurements for May, June and July were roughly twice as high as usual for these months, said climate analyst Hanne Heiberg at Meteorological Institute.

But the rain and waterlogged ground, literally, didn’t stop there.

Like 25 meters of fresh snow

As of Friday morning August 12, rain over Vassvatnet and Lurøy had reached 2,486 millimeters, according to climate observers at Metereologisk, Tone Huseby, opposite Dagbladet.

Meteorologists’ rule of thumb is that one millimeter of rain equals one centimeter of dry fresh snow.

So, 25 meters of new snow has theoretically fallen on 1,869 residents of the municipality of Lurøy this year.

Calculations become theoretical. Dry fresh snow rarely comes out to sea on the Helgeland coast.

– The worst thing I’ve ever seen

Disaster for agriculture

For agriculture in Lurøy, extreme weather is approaching disaster.

Even if the weather is dry now, pastures and fields need four or five days of drying before it is possible to get out on the tractor without causing major damage to the movers.

Meanwhile, the grass is rotting at the roots.

Representatives from Norges Bondelag and Nordland Bondelag were outside Helgeland earlier this week to discuss the situation with local farmers.

– Sad, strong impression

– It makes a very strong impression to see how it looks. It’s a sad sight, says secretary general Sigrid Hjørnegård of the Norwegian Farmers’ Association Helgeland Blad.

Glenn Grønneberg Johansson has been a farmer for 39 years. He has only harvested 120 hectares of land of 500 hectares.

– Twice this year I haven’t finished the first cut until August. But I’ve never experienced such a condition this year, he said.

The bright spot for food producers and others in Lurøy now is that dry weather with flashes of the sun is forecast for the next few days, according to yr.no.

Also Tromso

Lurøy has been at the rain stop for several years in front of Florida in Bergen.

The wettest year in Lurøy so far was 1964 with 4,255.8 millimeters of rainfall. Florida’s wettest year was 2015 with 3101.7 millimeters, according to the Meteorological Institute.

The wettest daily record at Lurøy is 181.8 millimeters, since 1961.

Not only Lurøy, but also Troms have recorded record rainfall so far this year.

821.9 millimeters in seven months is the highest rainfall figure in 101.

But the weather is dry in relation to the municipality of Lurøy close to the Arctic Circle.
