US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman warned against signs that Russian President Vladimir Putin might use tactical nuclear weapons in a “controlled” escalation of the Ukraine war, wrote Sky News.
Sherman was speaking yesterday at the opening of NATO’s annual arms control conference, which this year is being held in the United States for the first time since 2004.
– It is very important for us to be aware of this, stressed the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Putin announced last month that Russia intends to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. Sherman saw this as an example of a president “trying to use threats in a controlled way.”
Tactical nuclear weapons are used on the battlefield and/or against limited military targets – unlike warheads which are designed to kill as many people as possible and cause maximum material damage.
Russia has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world. Putin has previously denied that he has plans to use such means in the Ukraine conflict.
