Expectations were high when England started the European Championship at Old Trafford. The host nation has never won a European Championship, but they have reached the final twice. Did they go all the way with the support of the home crowd?

Austria was the team that surprised everyone and made it to a sensational European Championship semi-final in 2017. Now they have left an impressive European Championship qualifier conceding just three goals, including 0-0 at home to the French giants. So Britain should be warned, but can Austria surprise one more time?

This is a match that Norway must win to gain control of the progress of the group. The return of Ada Hegerberg has contributed to an ambitious medal goal at the European Championships, and then there is no room for error.

Statistical service Gracenote gives Northern Ireland the lowest chance (three per cent) of progressing from the group stage – of all European Championship nations. Northern Ireland is also the lowest-ranked team in the European Championships (47th place).

Northern Ireland’s hopes rest largely on Liverpool’s Rachel Furness, who is the national team’s all-time leading scorer with 38 goals in 81 games. Can he put a stick in a wheel for Norway?

Friday 8 July: Danish dynamite?

Pernille Louder

POPULAR: Denmark captain Pernille Harder is one of the biggest stars in the European Championship circus.

Group B has long been called the “death group”, and here it slams from the start. Golden Ball winner Alexia Putellas will set up Spain’s stars, and Finland are faced with the near-impossible task of progressing.

Former European Championship finalist Denmark will also be an outsider in the company. Considering Finland lost all matches, most of the foundations were already laid in the opening match. Can Pernille Harder and co. causing trouble for the eight-time (!) European Championship champions from Germany?

The first Saturday of the European Championship opens with what will be a key game for the outside teams in group C. If Portugal or Switzerland are to have any chance of progressing, they “must” have three points in the first game. Switzerland came off a heavy charge of leading with two solid losses to Germany (7-0) and England (0-4).

The Netherlands and Sweden are strong favorites to continue, and it will be interesting to see how that marks the opening match. Are our Swedish neighbors weighed down by hope, or did they have a grip from the start?

Thousands of Icelandic supporters are expected to feature in the European Championships, but only a few of them will fit in this match. It was played at Manchester City’s Academy Stadium, which only has room for 4700. The small European Championship Stadium has created a strong reaction ahead of the European Championships, and now the smallest stadium will be the turn. Both Belgium and Iceland need to have a win to be able to fight for the 2nd place behind big favorites France.

France may have the most fearsome attacking line in the European Championships. Marie-Antoinette Katoto provided another raw season for PSG, and the goalscoring machine could quickly shoot France all the way to Wembley. Italy has benefited from reaching the semifinals of the European Championships in 25 years, and Milena Bertolini really needs to whip up a tactical genius punch to discipline “Les Bleues”.

Vivianne Miedema

Switzerland have not won a game since Lithuania were beaten 7-0 in November. Now painful points are needed, but Sweden should at least have some too big numbers.

At the same time, Portugal will compete with the reigning European Cup champions from the Netherlands. Portugal, which every year hosts the Algarve Cup, has in fact only appeared in the European Cup three times (1984, 2017, 2022).

Thursday 14 July: Can Iceland surprise?

Sara Björk Gunnarsdottir

ICELAND HOPE: Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir gets ready for Juventus before the European Championship.

It takes a lot for that French no won group D, and thus there would be a real race for the second quarter-final ticket. Can Iceland, led by Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir, send Italy out of the European Championship?

France have lost just two games since March 2019 – both against the United States. In other words, Belgium faces a mature task.

Ada Hegerberg

SETUP: Ada Hegerberg lands a key role as Norway fight for promotion from group A.

Photo: MARIUS SIMENSEN / BILDBYRÅN NORWAY

Now comes the final, decisive hurdle for Norway. Austria were on the opposite side of the field with a very solid defensive game. Can Norway break through the wall?

Moreover, the stage is set for the rival neighbors’ finish when home favorites England meet Northern Ireland. It can’t be so dense and flat on the pitch – how many goals have England scored behind the Northern Ireland goalkeeper?

Saturday, July 16: Death group decided

Lars Søndergaard

EXPERIENCE: Lars Søndergaard started his coaching career at AaB Denmark in 1997. Now he has been in charge of the Danish women’s team since 2017.

Photo: LUDVIG THUNMAN / BILDBYRÅN

How about now, Denmark? The giants from Spain stood tall at the final hurdle. Germany finished against the simplest team on paper in the group, namely Finland. Germany is the country that has won the most European Championships, but can they get into trouble in the last game?

Sunday 17 July: The main winner of the Netherlands?

Sweden. Fridolina Rolfö

SWEDEN FAVORITE: Can Fridolina Rolfö, Kosovare Asllani, Magdalena Eriksson and the rest of the Swedes cheer for a group win?

Photo: FREDRIK KARLSSON / BILDBYRÅN

Sweden ended their group game against Portugal, and they will be fighting for a group win with the Netherlands. The Netherlands with star striker Vivianne Miedema ended the group game against Switzerland. There could be plenty of goals here, and the top scorer at the top for oranges could tighten their grip on the top goalscorer title.

Manuela Giugliano

AIR BARON: Manuela Giugliano will look to fight Italy all the way to the quarter-finals.

Photo: LUDVIG THUNMAN / BILDBYRÅN
