The American Internet company Google has stopped selling online advertising in Russia. The decision applies to search engines, the YouTube platform and external partners who publish content through Google. Reuters reported on Friday. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Twitter or Snap took similar steps. Google has the highest revenue from online advertising in the world.
“Due to extraordinary circumstances, we are suspending Google advertising in Russia,” the company said in a statement. “The situation is rapidly evolving and we will continue to share up-to-date information as needed,” he added.
The company has previously made it impossible to buy or sell ads through its technology to Russian-funded media. He also referred to his policy on sensitive events, which prohibits marketing seeking to profit from war, with the exception of protest or anti-war advertising.
Russia’s Roskomnadzor on Monday ordered Google to stop showing ads that contain inaccurate information about losses suffered by Russian soldiers and Ukrainian civilians. On Thursday, regulators ordered American companies to stop displaying ads on the YouTube platform with “false political information” about Ukraine, aimed at “misinforming Russian viewers” about current events.
Moscow has in the past fined or restricted access to services that ignored its demands. Last year, Google paid a fine of more than 32 million rubles (6.8 million crowns) for content violations. According to the database of the company SPARK, Google’s sales in Russia in 2020 were 85.5 billion rubles.
