(Elbil24): – They have achieved an important climate policy milestone, said secretary general Christina Bu of the Electric Vehicle Association in a press release.

Bu was referring to Bergen, which tops an overview of the share of electric cars in Norway’s ten largest cities. The people of Bergen are leading ahead of other large cities such as Oslo and Trondheim.

There are currently 50,000 electric cars on the roads in Bergen. This means fewer greenhouse gas emissions, less noise, and better air quality.

– Bergen clearly shows that the electric car policy is working and we are reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is especially important at a time when good news about the climate is no longer expected, Bu said.

Discounts on toll rings

The Secretary General of the Electric Vehicle Association believes that this shows that electric vehicle policy is not just about national action. It is also important to have aggressive local politicians. According to Bu, the high share of electric cars in Bergen did not happen by itself.

– In Bergen, they have been focusing on the electric car policy for a long time. For example, they provide large environmental discounts for electric cars on toll lanes, he said – and pointed out that environmental discounts on toll lanes are one of the most effective measures in electric car policy:

– Urban areas with the highest number of electric vehicles also have significant reductions in environmental costs.

After Bergen, the municipality of Bærum follows with an electric car share of 38.7 percent. Oslo is in third place with 37.3 percent.

The image at the top of the article was taken in Drammen. The municipality of Drammen is last on the list of Norway’s ten largest cities, with an electric car share of 21.6 percent. The figures are taken from the Road Traffic Information Council, OFV.

– Oslo and Bærum are not far behind. If city governments want to achieve emissions reduction targets, they must fight for the podium and fight for the top positions, Bu concluded.
