Olomouc firefighter Martin Schneider, who is now competing with the national team in Japan’s prestigious World Baseball Classic, made it to the front page of the New York Times. In a tournament filled with professional stars, the Czech national team competes with the best teams on the planet.

Olomouc firefighter Martin Schneider has now qualified for the World Baseball Classic tournament, where the best teams in the world play. The story of how an amateur athlete from a small European country beat a professional baseball player has made the rounds…

“The story of the Czech baseball players reached the world media, and it was of great interest in America. Our representatives all had civilian jobs or were studying, but at the same time they were playing baseball on a world level. At the Olomouc station, an American crew from the Major League Baseball is making a documentary, and our firefighters are also being interviewed by a reporter from the New York Times.” explained a spokesman for the fire department Lucie Balažová.

The article even made it to the front page of this well-known newspaper this week. Yesterday, the Czech national team defeated China in the tournament.

Like his other teammates, he has it Martin Schneider his civil work and trains only in his free time. “Organizationally, it’s demanding. However, I work best under pressure, which suits me both at work and at play. I then do my best, I concentrate.” describes 36-year-old Schneider, who served six years in Brno and is now in his third year working in Olomouc, where he is from.

Understandably, he has a large fan base here, his colleagues have closely followed the progress of the national team towards the most prestigious baseball tournament in the world and are now also watching the match. “Of course, sometimes we make fun of him, but at the same time we are very proud of him and we support him. In my career, I have never met a top athlete like this in the fire department, and I am very happy that we have him on shifts.” the platoon leader remotely sends support to the Japanese Jiří Glabazňa.
