Polish curling returns to the international arena

The Polish Federation of Curling Clubs is represented for the first time – admitted to the member group of the World Curling Federation during the WCF Congress in September. The decision still has to be approved by the Court of Arbitration for Sport due to the filing of a complaint by the Polish Curling Association against the WCF, which excluded the organization from its structure. The court rejected the application, so the PFKC could present its representative – although for formal reasons not the Polish one. Under the Sports Law, only Polish sports associations can designate such status, and the PFKC cannot apply for this status until the final court approves the decision of the Minister of Sports and Tourism to remove PZC from the Polish register. sports association.

Without the crest on the chest, but recognized worldwide as the Polish national team, the team led by skip Michał Gasik-Daszkowski will return the white and red flag to the world championship arena. His team won the right to start in Finland during the PFKC Wheelchair Curling Cup Tournament in September, beating club mates from the Polish Sports Organization in ódź. The team consisting of: Michał Gasik-Daszkowski, ukasz Waszek, Dariusz Mikuła, Joanna Kozakiewicz and Monika Bodych along with coach Agnieszka Schröder and physiotherapist Patchaporn Seephungtong will depart on Wednesday evening from Okęcie to Helsinki, from where they will travel 50 km to Lohja. to the west. There they will start the struggle in Group A, where they will face England, Japan, Switzerland, Finland and Italy. A place in the top three will allow you to play in the playoffs for a division B championship medal and at the same time be promoted to wheelchair elite, whose championship will take place in March 2023 in Richmond, Canada.

For Polish badminton, the team’s performance in wheelchairs was Poland’s return to the world championship after two years of the pandemic and the first period of suspension, and then the expulsion of the Polish Curling Association from the world structure. “Participation in this championship was made possible mainly thanks to the policy of the World Curling Federation, in favor of Polish curlers, which put the membership of the Polish Curling Club Federation on the ballot despite awaiting the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne and retained our team’s place in the tournament in Lohja until such time- the last moment. “- said the secretary of the PFKC, Wojciech Nowakowski. – “Now we are waiting for the final decision of the Polish court, which will allow us to finally close the chapter called the Polish Curling Association, thanks to which we will be able to apply for the status of the Polish sports association and then for the minister of subsidizing travel to subsequent championships, also in junior and olympic categories…”

Curved wheelchairs have been a Paralympic discipline since the 2006 Turin Olympics. Poland has yet to have a chance to appear at the Olympics – the championships in Lohja and perhaps in Richmond could bring it closer to this debut. More than two weeks ago, the Polish team under the club name ISRS Culani, with the participation of players from the Polish Sports Organization, won the prestigious World Curling Tour tournament in Prague. Daszkowski and Kozakiewicz, and Agnieszka Kachel and Maciej Kara. Curling in a wheelchair became more aware of fans just last winter thanks to a broadcast from the Paralympics in Beijing, where the judge was Polish, Marta Pluta. Michał Gasik-Daszkowski then sat behind the microphone, sharing his experiences and knowledge with the audience.

The peculiarity of the curling on the trolley is that all the strength of the stone comes from the hand releasing the stone with a special extender, and the sliding path is not fixed by brushing. However, wheelchair curlers also compete with brushed walking curlers – but this is especially true in friendly tournaments. The wheelchair player in the game must demonstrate great precision by giving the stone the appropriate strength, direction and rotation – to place it at the desired point near the so-called “House” at the other end of the playing field on a layer of ice measuring more than 42 meters.

We encourage you to keep your fingers crossed for our representation. The Championships at Lohji begin on Saturday, November 5th and will run through Thursday, November 10th.
