A musical for the love of Fellini’s films

The idea for a musical based on Federico Fellini’s 1983 film “A Ship Sails” was proposed to Wojciech Kościelniak by Capitol Musical Theater artistic director Konrad Imiela.

At first glance, I thought that turning it into a musical might be difficult, but then, when I sat down to write the script, I noticed some interesting chords, including: chords from Wyspiański’s “The Wedding”, in which many people represent their world and time closed in one space and the relationships, emotions, tension between them drive the entire show until the next twist and the finale.

explained Wojciech Kościelniak, the show’s director

The action of the musical, like the film, takes place in 1914, when a ship with distinguished passengers leaves the port of Naples. The artists will set sail to fulfill the last wishes of the late opera singer, Edmea Tetui, and bid her farewell during a sea voyage that ends with the scattering of her ashes. The expedition was interrupted by news that there were Serbian refugees on board (and that Archduke Franz Ferdinand had just been assassinated in Sarajevo).

The luxury ship’s passengers enjoy the comfort of social status, but they don’t yet realize that their world will end forever. There are no emergency exits from either the destruction of World War I or a ship full of relics of a vanished reality.

Musical “A ship sailed” – a series of musicals about artists

While preparing the work, Wojciech Kościelniak looked at Fellini’s work many times, replaying some passages so as not to miss a word. Only later, based on the film script, he built his performance script as close as possible to Fellini, although in the musical on the Capitol stage the entire text was written in verse and sung. – I won’t reveal too much if I say that the first and second acts are one fine musical sequence, which is more akin to an operatic narrative. The music starts from the beginning and stops only at the end – explains Wojciech Kościelniak.

Konrad Imiela, Capitol’s artistic director, acknowledged that the show is perfectly timed, and that audiences of the musical will find many references to what is happening around us today.

In this show, we also talk about ourselves, the community of artists, who are a little detached from reality, living in their bubble, inflating their egos, enjoying the show. And here, next to us, there is great history, war, like the one that occurred in Europe in 1914. There is a lot of spark at the intersection between the fickle bird artist and the brutal world of politics. And it seems to me that when we create a theater performance, we refer to contemporary times in a certain way, use classical literature, and try to depict the world in which we live.

Federico Fellini – what is interesting about his films

Wojciech Kościelniak admits that in Fellini’s works he was fascinated by the imagination, the way of looking at the world, its multi-layered nature, the combination of highly creative and moving humor with layers of deepest drama and the intertwining of the individual, the collective, the social and the social. political fate. – Fellini not only covered all kinds of topics, but he did so in his own unique way. The language of the film is lost nowadays, but for me it is the greatest in the history of cinema – I am the director of the musical “A Ship Sails”.
