Moscow – Russia’s Foreign Ministry has submitted a proposal to the Russian State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, to withdraw from the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Health Organization, Kommersant wrote on his website, referring to the deputy chairman of the lower house.

The ministry sent a list of Russian agreements with international organizations for possible termination. Exiting the WTO and WHO will also be considered, said Duma Deputy Chair Pyotr Tolstoy. According to him, the deputies will evaluate all proposals together with the senators.

According to Tolstoy, all agreements that are “unfavorable but directly detrimental” need to be reconsidered.

“Russia has withdrawn from the Council of Europe. Now is the time to leave the WTO and WHO which have ignored all our country’s obligations,” he said.

Kommersant recalled that in response to Russia’s military operations in Ukraine, the Kremlin’s official date for the invasion, which was ordered on February 24 by President Vladimir Putin, the West began imposing sanctions on Russia. Russian authorities believe that these sanctions destroy the WTO’s system of rules. Already 14 members of this organization have deprived the regime of the biggest profits from Russia. A bill on Russia’s withdrawal from the WTO was submitted to the State Duma in March, but the deputies have not yet decided on it. Ukraine has also started a debate about closing the WHO office in Moscow. A resolution to this effect was adopted by the organization’s European committee on 10 May.
